Download Simply Chess: A Full-Featured Chess Game with Steam Support and Trading Cards

Stockfish rose in popularity after it competed with AlphaZero, an artificial intelligence program that taught itself to play chess. Although AlphaZero beat Stockfish in 2019, you can imagine the strength of Stockfish by the fact that its chess engine searches for 70 million positions in chess.

Luckily, almost every modern chess GUI program supports playing against Stockfish. And choosing Stockfish as an opponent will no doubt be challenging, but how does one further their knowledge without a good challenge? If you want to train in chess, the chess gurus recommend that you play against strong chess engines like Stockfish.

Simply Chess is the standard chess app if you are a beginner in online chess. You can find it on Steam, the video game distributor available on Ubuntu, as well as Mac and Windows. Simply Chess is free with a 4.99 USD premium upgrade.

A 2D Linux chess client, GNOME Chess combines the regular functionality of chess apps with its unique ability to automatically detect and work with engines. So, for instance, if you had installed Stockfish as we demonstrated earlier, GNOME can detect the Stockfish engine and incorporate it into the GUI on its own.

PGN (Portable Game Notation) is an easy-to-read format which records both the moves of the game (in standard algebraic notation) and any related data such as the names of the players, the winner/loser, and even the date the game was played. Here is an example taken directly from the chess.com archives: [Event "Chess.com Staff Tournament #2"] [Site "Chess.com"] [Date "2010.10.26"] [White "ACEChess"] [Black "piotr"] [Result "1-0"] [WhiteElo "2037"] [BlackElo "2125"] [TimeControl "1 in 3 days"] [Termination "ACEChess won by resignation"] 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.d4 Nxd5 4.c4 Nb6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.h3 O-O 8.Qd2 Nc6 9.Nf3 e5 10.d5 Ne7 11.g4 f5 12.O-O-O e4 13.Ng5 h6 14.Ne6 Bxe6 15.dxe6 Qxd2+ 16.Rxd2 Rad8 17.Bc5 Rxd2 18.Kxd2 Rd8+ 19.Kc2 Nc6 20.gxf5 Nd4+ 21.Bxd4 Rxd4 22.Rg1 g5 23.c5 Nc4 24.Bxc4 Rxc4 25.Rd1 Bf6 26.Kb3 Rxc5 27.Nxe4 Rxf5 28.Nxf6+ Kf8 29.Ng4 h5 30.Ne3 Rf3 31.Rd5 g4 32.hxg4 1-0 If you were to copy this entire block of PGN and post it as a Game or Sequence of Moves diagram in a forum post, then you'd be able add commentary before/after any moves in the sequence. Anyone reading that post would be able to play through the game using the arrows at the bottom as well as see any comments you made in the editor. Also, all the information about who played it, when, where, etc., would be displayed at the top of the diagram. Of course, you don't NEED all the extra information. Copying just the moves (1.e4 through 16.exd3) will suffice. But then you wouldn't have any player/game information unless you manually entered it in the "Game Details" tab of the editor. In order to get a PGN from a game, simply click on the download button underneath the move buttons on any chess game, ongoing or complete:

If you REALLY want to become good at reading FEN, read this article. Here is what an FEN string looks like for the initial setup of the board: rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1 Here is what it looks like if 1. e4 is played: rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/4P3/8/PPPP1PPP/RNBQKBNR b KQkq e3 0 1 And here is what it looks like at the final position in the PGN string I provided above: 5k2/ppp5/4P3/3R3p/6P1/1K2Nr2/PP3P2/8 b - - 1 32 FEN strings are good if you want to simply show a single position, or if you want to post a puzzle. In that case, you just paste the FEN into the chess.com Diagram Editor, enter the solution moves and insert. It is much simpler than setting up each piece individually. In order to get an FEN from a game, go to the bottom of the games screen and click the "Share" icon. Then select the PGN tab. The FEN will be listed on this tab as well, above the PGN.

There is a new Deep-Junior.zip file of both Deep Junior Yokohama and Deep Junior 13.3 chess engines. This is the download any customer running Mac OS 10.15 Catalina should use. Do you want to step up the rating ladder and quickly improve your chess? And do you feel like you need a way to find out how to play every single chess position in the world when it comes up on the board?

This is a complete guide to all of the seventeen pawn structures in chess. By reading each of these articles, created just for you, you will realize that pawn structures are the backbone of chess, because they can teach you how to play every single position you can find.

This guide is suited for chess players of all levels, though certainly players of Class C (1400-1600) and above are more likely to be familiar with a greater number of strategic concepts, which is undoubtedly of help in the process of understanding pawn structures.

Reading them carefully is, of course, the first step. However, you should be willing to put all of the things you will learn to practice, by playing chess games, either on the Internet or over the board.

The millennia-old pastime of chess has been enjoying an explosion of interest. Whether people are longing for any engaging hobby to keep themselves sane during the long wait, or they fell prey to a popular Netflix drama about a chess prodigy, competition is heating up. While games using a physical board will have to wait a bit longer for most of us, there are excellent online chess platforms and a healthy chess community available in a few clicks or thumb taps.
